Information Sources for Income Maintenance Experiments

Listed below are information sources on the four income maintenance experiments conducted in the United States between 1968 and 1978. Where available, links are included both to external sources, and to current holdings of the IRP Archival Collection. The experiments, which were also referred to as negative income tax experiments, were conducted in New Jersey, Rural Iowa and North Carolina, Gary, Indiana, and Seattle and Denver.

New Jersey Income Maintenance Experiment

During 1968-1972, the Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP) and Mathematica Policy Research (MPR) conducted the New Jersey Income Maintenance Experiment in Trenton, Paterson, Passaic, and Jersey City, New Jersey, and Scranton, Pennsylvania, under a contract with the Office of Economic Opportunity, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Rural Income Maintenance Experiment (RIME)

During 1970-1972, the Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP) conducted the Rural Income Maintenance Experiment in Duplin County, North Carolina, and Pocahontas and Calhoun counties, Iowa , under a contract with the Office of Economic Opportunity.

During 1970-1976, Stanford Research Institute (SRI) and Mathematica Policy Research (MPR) conducted the Seattle-Denver Income Maintenance Experiment in Seattle, Washington, (1970-76) and Denver, Colorado, (1971-76), under a contract with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
