There are three primary federal housing assistance programs in the United States: the Housing Choice Voucher (or “Section 8”) Program, which provides vouchers for housing selected by recipients in the private market; project-based rental assistance, which provides subsidized rent in designated privately owned buildings; and public housing, which provides subsidized rent in publicly owned and operated housing.
