Reducing high infant mortality rates in the United States

The United States is an outlier among nations in infant mortality rates. Of the approximately 4 million babies born in the United States in 2015, 23,460 died within the first year of life. Public health officials are alarmed not only by the high overall infant death rate compared to many other countries, but also by large disparities in outcomes within the United States by race and ethnicity and geographic location. This brief focuses on infant mortality trends, disparities, and contributing factors, as well as evidence-based strategies for preventing and reducing deaths.
